Welcome to the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society

A Leader among America’s privately supported Maritime Institutions, the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society operates the popular Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point, Michigan, located at the Whitefish Point Light Station, a National Historic Site in Michigan’s scenic Upper Peninsula. The Society also offers programs at its U.S. Weather Bureau Building in Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan, an element of Soo Locks Park National Historic Landmark. The Shipwreck Museum is open daily from May 1 through October 31; the Weather Bureau is open year-round.
Underwater Exploration is at the heart of the Shipwreck Society’s mission. Using its 47-foot Research Vessel David Boyd, a Phantom S4 Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), a Marine Sonics SideScan Sonar, and highly skilled technical divers, the Society actively searches for and documents deep, well-preserved shipwrecks of Lake Superior, many lost in time over 100 years before.
In addition to its historic sites, the Shipwreck Society actively publishes newsletters, fine art prints, videos, and booklets. Call our year-round information telephone number any time at 800-635-1742.
Please enjoy browsing the web site to learn about our many exciting projects!
