The Shipwreck Society is pleased to announce that the 2021 Annual Appeal has begun!
The Annual Appeal is intended to focus on Operational Funding; but, we offer you the opportunity to designate your donation for a specific project as well. Our list of project needs has been adjusted based on what has happened during 2021 and is shown later in this post.
Fortunately, the summer of 2021 clearly demonstrated the important role the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum plays in the cultural health of Michigan’s citizens. We were able to run a full season, whereas we could not do that in 2020. Many visitors told us that they were thrilled that the museum was open while so many other venues had been closed due to the pandemic. Leaving their homes for a visit to the Whitefish Point Light Station in the Upper Peninsula meant a lot to our audience.
Keeping the museum open still requires charitable contributions. Our donors from our Annual and Summer Appeals should feel proud that their funds worked to help our 2021 visitors in a very direct way that should not be underestimated.
Our members and donors should know that the new Parking Lot WILL be constructed in 2022 thanks to grant funding from Eastern Federal Lands / Federal Highway Administration / Michigan Department of Transportation, with the approval of the Michigan Audubon Society and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. The exact construction dates will be announced later. But the Shipwreck Society has to provide a substantial match for this grant, so it has been added to the list of upcoming capital projects.
Specific projects for 2022 are:
- Matching Funds for Parking Lot Restoration
- 2nd Assistant Keepers Quarters Reconstruction
- Motor Lifeboat Completion and Installation
- Underwater Research Activities
- Development of Future Museum Exhibits and Educational Outreach

The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum has become one of the most popular cultural attractions in the Upper Peninsula. This achievement is due in large measure to the support of our generous donors; thank you!
