We’ve had an eventful season thus far at the Shipwreck Museum, including what is shaping up to be our busiest year on record. We opened a new exhibit, hosted a group of surviving family members from the 1966 Daniel J. Morrell shipwreck and had what can only be described as an astonishing year where shipwreck discovery is concerned. Our Director of Marine Operations, Darryl Ertel Jr., and his brother Dan, along with others, have crisscrossed a massive area of southeast Lake Superior and in the process, discovered 9 new shipwrecks! Some of these wrecks are more obscure, while others, such as the Adella Shores, C.F. Curtis, and Michigan, are better known and have been “targets” that underwater researchers have hunted for decades. We’ll highlight these shipwreck discoveries in the next issue of the Shipwreck Journal, and on our website (soon).
The primary reason for this letter though is to announce our plans for the GLSHS Annual Meeting. In recent weeks the COVID cases in Chippewa County have gone up substantially, with a number of businesses closing in Paradise, MI. Thus, we have decided to host our annual meeting in a virtual format. The date for the virtual annual meeting is Thursday, October 28 at 7:00pm (Eastern Time). We will be partnering with the Michigan Historic Preservation Network to host this (virtual) annual meeting. Our keynote speaker will be the award-winning Great Lakes maritime historian, videographer and author, Ric Mixter. Ric is a current GLSHS board member and joined us a number of times on the Boyd this summer, and was aboard when we located the wreck of the Michigan. We will conduct the annual GLSHS business meeting and present a slate of new, and returning candidates for election to the GLSHS Board of Directors. A Zoom “polling” feature will allow you to participate in this aspect of the meeting. If we do not have an email address for you, submit your name and email address here, or call us at 800-635-1742 and supply that information. We’ll email the Zoom link for the conference. Please call that same number if you have any questions, or if you need to renew your membership. As always, thank you for being a member of the Great Lakes Shipwreck Society, and please join us for the 2021 Annual Meeting.
